View toward buttes in Papago Park.
The purplish coloration is produced in response to cold or drought.
This cactus blooms in August and September.
One of the first unique desert plants to pique my interest. I can hardly wait to photograph one when it blossoms in the spring.
Foreground: organ pipe cactus beside a saguaro without any branches.
Saguaros when young need protection of other trees to be able to surive to become monarchs of the desert.
Green trunks of the palo verde tree.
Shelters like this ramada were constructed by the Native Peoples as places to rest and work.
The larger saguaros can hold up to 1,500 gallons of water.
Saguaros usually branch at the same level.
A succulant like I gave away from my Florida collection.
Another photo of the striking purple cactus.
Don't be fooled, these cactus are not cuddley.
The photos in this gallery were from my very first visit to the Desert Botanical Gardens. Just think of the different prespectives a repeated tour will bring.
